The Italian President, Mr Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, spent his first euros on two cups of coffee for his wife and himself in a Naples bar. The landlord of the Caffe Gambrinus wanted to offer free coffees to the presidential pair, but Mr Ciampi insisted on paying and produced two €1 coins to pay the €1 54-cents bill.
