Two children have died and up to 30 people were rescued from a block of London flats tonight after a fire swept through the building.

More than 100 firefighters tackled the blaze at the 12-storey tower block in Camberwell, south London. A fire brigade spokesman said seven floors were on fire. A three-week-old baby and a seven-year-old child were confirmed to have died.

Emergency services were called to Lakanal House in Havil Street at 4.25pm.

"A number of rescues have been carried out in extremely difficult circumstances and fire crews equipped with extended duration breathing apparatus are working very hard to reach those still affected and carry out an exhaustive search of the building," a fire service spokesman said.

"The building is heavily smoke-logged. The fire's believed to have started on the fourth floor and spread upwards through the building so firefighters are working in very difficult conditions."

The fire is thought to have spread quickly to the 11th floor.
