Madrid - The owner and captain of a Spanish boat which sank killing 20 French pensioners have been charged with serious negligence leading to the deaths, state radio reported yesterday.

The two men, owner Mr Bartolome Gayola and captain Simon Rodriguez, were charged late on Saturday and given three days to pay bail of 5 million pesetas (£22,000) each. The boat, on a tour of scenic lake in the town of Banyoles, was carrying 141 people.
