A major search was under way last night around Achill Island after a man at sea in a currach was reported to be in difficulty. His brother, who went out to search for him, also in a currach, is also reported missing.
The man was on his way to Inishbiggle from Dooniver pier on the east side of Achill Island at about 11 p.m. last night when his currach was caught in a strong tide. The Achill lifeboat, the Air Corp helicopter based at Finner and the Achill Irish Marine Emergency Service are involved in the search.
