Airtricity League round-up:A late strike from Gary Twigg helped Shamrock Rovers beat UCD 2-1 at Belfield to go level at the top of the Premier Division with Dundalk, who could only manage a 0-0 draw at home to Galway United.

Rovers went ahead in the eighth minute after Stephen Bradley was fouled on the edge of the area. James Chambers stepped up to take the free-kick, curling the ball around the wall to score in the bottom corner.

The Students were level seven minutes later when Paul Corry’s shot took a deflection off Paddy Kavanagh and past Alan Mannus in the Rovers net.

Rovers eventually took control of the game in the second half but were finding it hard to break down the home side.

That was until Twigg made the crucial intervention with five minutes remaining. UCD cleared from a corner but only to substitute Sean O’Connor, whose cross was flicked on by Dessie Baker for danger man Twigg to fire home.

An out of sorts Dundalk passed up their chance to go clear at the top as they were held by Galway at Oriel Park.

Former Dundalk boss Sean Connor could have left with all three points after a fine second-half display from the Tribesmen.
