Twickenham will play host to the Heineken Cup final next May for the first time since 2000 when Munster were narrowly beaten by Northampton 9-8.

A then record 68,441 watched that match and the organisers would be very happy with a repeat on Sunday, May 23rd.

European Rugby Cup chief executive Derek McGrath said: "From today all roads lead to Twickenham. Announcing the venue now is in the best interests of the Heineken Cup as it adds focus, value and incentive to the tournament and all its stake holders and partners."

Tickets for the 2004 final will go on sale tomorrow.

ERC have once again announced the venue nearly six months in advance of the final and McGrath believes that policy is the best option for Europe's premier club competition.

He said: "This gives all 24 teams in the tournament a specific goal and offers the fans a definitive venue as they follow their team's progress through the tournament. The Heineken Cup final is now established as a major European sporting event and it deserves and requires the investment of six months to build up to the event."

Rugby Football Union chief executive Francis Baron was delighted that Twickenham - the current home of the World Cup - has been given the nod.

"We will do the best job we possibly can for the Heineken Cup and we will provide a marketing strategy which should help it become a sell-out. It's been a great year for English rugby and this should continue into the Heineken Cup," he said.

The decision to keep the final at Lansdowne Road last year, despite two French teams contesting the title, didn't sit well with everybody and the ERC will be no doubt be keeping their fingers crossed a similar situation does not arise this year.
