Turkey's cabinet said it would ask parliament today to consider a motion to deploy peacekeepers to neighbouring Iraq, in line with a request from its NATO ally the United States.

Cabinet spokesman Cemil Cicek told reporters the motion would be sent to parliament later in the day. A vote could come as early as tomorrow.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said he believes parliament, where his party commands a large majority, will approve the motion despite the assembly's rejection in March of a government request to allow US forces to deploy on Turkish soil for an invasion of Iraq.
