Turkey to be EU candidate

Berlin - The EU will recognise Turkey's membership candidacy at December's EU summit in Helsinki, the commissioner responsible for enlarging the EU, Mr Gunter Verheugen, said in an interview published yesterday. "We want to give Turkey the status of candidate for membership at the summit meeting of heads of state and government in December," the European Commissioner was quoted as saying in the German daily Die Welt.
