Drivers on London's underground train system are being bitten by fleas hopping about inside their cabs, trade union officials said yesterday, adding that they have negotiated a compensation package for the nuisance.

More worryingly for the millions of passengers who use the subway each week, there was a suggestion the fleas were not confined to the drivers' cabs, but were infesting the carriages too, although the company responsible for the system denied this.

The drivers' union, Aslef, said it had successfully negotiated compensation packages of up to £500 for its members who had been bitten while on duty.
