Algiers - Troops backed by helicopter gun-ships and artillery attacked an Islamist stronghold in northern Algeria, killing at least 40 rebels, the French-language daily paper, La Novelle Republique, said yesterday.

The three-day operation was the latest in a series of attacks by the army trying to flush out Muslim rebels from their key hideouts in the north and south-west of the oil and gas-producing country.
