Jakarta - Indonesian troops fired warning shots and teargas in clashes with protesters in Jakarta yesterday as tensions rose ahead of the possible re-election of the unpopular President, Mr B.J. Habibie, next week.
Jakarta hospital officials said more than 70 people were hurt, including one person shot in the liver by a rubber bullet, in the second clash in two days near the parliament complex.
The top legislature, the People's Consultative Assembly, was due later in the day to begin its review of Mr Habibie's brief, turbulent rule before it chooses a leader on Wednesday in the nation's first contested presidential poll.
