The newspaper of Trinity College Dublin newspaper, the University Times, took the top prize at the student media award for the third year running last night. It is the sixth year in a row in which one of Trinity’s publications has received the Newspaper of the Year accolade.

The University Times had “the verve and attitude about it that you’d hope for from a college newspaper”, judge and Irish Times arts editor Shane Hegarty said.

The paper’s rival publication, the Trinity News, received the editor of the year for Kate Palmer. Other major awards given last night included journalist of the year for Jerry Larkin of University College Cork and photographer of the year for Antonia Zharko of Griffith College Dublin.

Thirty-five national student media awards were given out from a record 1,500 entrants from 25 colleges . "As jobs become scarce, people are realising that winning an 'SMEDIA' can put you on the right track and fast track your career," event organiser Colman Byrne of Oxegen.iesaid.
