A group of Travellers has breached a security gate erected by Mayo County Council and moved about 12 caravans and motor vehicles onto the dunes at the blue flag Bertra Beach, about 12km (7.5 miles) from Westport.

The breach, which happened last weekend, has upset local people and beach users as well as the Murrisk Development Association. On Sunday the Travellers gained entry to the beach.

A lock was broken on a security barrier which was erected last year.

Mayo county secretary John Condon said yesterday the county council will be doing all it can to remove the Travellers from the area.

The council is considering taking legal action, he added.
