Bus Eireann cancelled all services to the west and north-west yesterday. Donegal, Sligo, Galway, Roscommon, Mayo and Limerick were affected.

Bus services in the south-east and greater Dublin area operated with some delays. Some buses travelled on the Dublin-Belfast route but the Derry service was cancelled.

Trains were running according to rescheduled seasonal timetables. Heavy demand for trains out of Westport and Galway meant more than 150 people had to be turned away by Iarnrod Eireann.

Galway city was without buses for a third day. Limerick and Cork had limited buses services in low-lying areas only.

Buses in Dublin were moving more slowly than normal. On three routes, in Howth, Glencullen and Ballyknockan, services were curtailed. Dublin Bus threatened to cut back Nitelink services if conditions deteriorated.

Galway, Sligo and Donegal Airports remained closed, with Donegal reporting up to 10 inches of snow on the runway.

Dublin, Shannon, Cork, Knock and Kerry Airports remained open but with delays, particularly on flights to and from the UK. One Ryanair flight from Dublin to Manchester was cancelled.

More than 300 passengers stranded in Shannon after Ryanair flights were cancelled on Thursday evening were flown to Stansted early yesterday.

Milk collections were disrupted in Galway and Mayo due to problems reaching farms.

Refuse collections and postal deliveries were cancelled in numerous areas in the west.

All National League premier and first division football matches scheduled for today have been cancelled. Last night's games were also called off.

Yesterday's race meeting at Leopardstown was cancelled. An eight-race card, featuring the seasonal reappearance of champion hurdler Istabraq, has been scheduled for the south Dublin track tomorrow, subject to a 7 a.m. track inspection.

New Year's Day racing at Fairyhouse is in jeopardy with the track currently unraceable. An inspection will take place tomorrow.

Six Division One rugby games scheduled for today have been called off. Only Cork Constitution versus Lansdowne will go ahead. Shannon versus Clontarf has been rescheduled for tomorrow.

Greyhound race meetings at Harold's Cross, Newbridge and Tralee were cancelled and tonight's meeting at Mullingar has been postponed.
