Severe disruption was caused to trains travelling in and out of Dublin's Heuston Station yesterday afternoon and evening following a derailment at Sallins, Co Kildare.

Delays of over an hour were experienced by trains travelling to and from Cork, Limerick and Galway as well as suburban services to Co Kildare.

A "trial train" containing carriages which had just been repaired and were being tested came off the rails before 4 p.m. in a siding at Sallins, and this affected the points on the main line.
