More than 10,500 runners and walkers are expected to take part in today's 25th Dublin City Marathon, leading to extensive traffic restrictions around the city.
The route starts at Nassau Street, travels through O'Connell Street to the Phoenix Park via North Circular Road. At Chapelizod, the race turns up St Lawrence's Road towards Inchicore. It then travels through Dolphin's Barn, Walkinstown, Kimmage, Templeogue, Milltown, Stillorgan Road, Ballsbridge, Pearse Street and finishes at Merrion Square.
Wheelchair athletes leave at 8.55 a.m. and the main field departs at 9 a.m.
The following city-centre streets are closed to traffic all day, until 5.30 p.m.: Merrion Square West, Merrion Square South, Merrion Street Upper (to the junction with Fitzwilliam Lane), Dawson Street (left-hand turn only), Nassau Street, Frederick Street, Clare Street, Merrion Square North.
Kildare Street is closed until 9.15 a.m.
The following gate closures apply in the Phoenix Park: North Circular Road gate 9 -10.30a.m.; Cabra gate 9 - 11 a.m.; Ashtown gate 9 - 11.30 a.m.; Castleknock gate 9 - 11.30 a.m.; Knockma- roon gate 9 a.m- noon; Chapelizod gate 9 a.m. - noon (entry restricted to hospital traffic only).
Along the rest of the route, gardaí and stewards say they will be in position to facilitate traffic, but motorists should expect some delays.
Motorists travelling north/ south and vice versa are advised to avoid city-centre routes and use the M50 or the East Link.
