Town centre sealed off

The centre of Portadown was sealed off for over three hours yesterday after two suspect devices were discovered in business premises in the town's High Street. Shortly before 10 a.m. branches of the Halifax and the Northern banks were evacuated. After a two-hour operation involving mechanised bomb disposal equipment, both devices were declared "elaborate hoaxes" shortly after 1 p.m.
