The British Conservative Party announced plans to sweep away excessive red tape and free businesses from needless bureaucracy today.

Shadow business secretary Ken Clarke said the Labour Government was a “handicap on business” the country could no longer afford.

“To get Britain back in business, the excessive regulation that businesses, and the great public services, face, has to be swept away.” Mr Clarke said a Tory government will:

  • Introduce a new 'star chamber' committee to ensure any new regulatory law is balanced by cuts to old laws on a "one in, one out" basis
  • Apply a 'sunset clause' to all regulatory quangos, forcing them to justify their existence after a period of time
  • Allow the public to nominate unpopular regulations for review and possible scrapping.

Mr Clarke warned that a Tory government was “set to take over the biggest mess that a Conservative Party has ever inherited from a Labour government”.

The situation was “far worse” than that faced by Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1979, the former Chancellor added.

“It is our duty to repair the damage after those years of recklessness and prepare the UK for a better future.”
