A top loyalist is being questioned by police in Northern Ireland tonight in connection with "serious criminal offences".

A top loyalist is being questioned by police in Northern Ireland tonight in connection with "serious criminal offences".

The man, understood to be a former UDA leader from Belfast, was stopped by police outside Loughbrickland, Co Down.

It is believed he was in a car travelling on the main Belfast-Dublin road.

A police spokesperson confirmed: "A man has been arrested for questioning in connection with serious criminal offences."
