Washington - The US tobacco industry settled its largest ever legal action yesterday when eight cigarette companies agreed to pay $15 billion to the state of Texas in return for the dropping of a case which was due to come to court in Austin yesterday. The tobacco companies will pay the sum over 25 years to reimburse Texas for costs incurred in treating smoking-related illnesses.
