JAKARTA- Three East Timorese seeking political asylum were apparently rebuffed by the French embassy in Jakarta yesterday. East Timorese sources said the three men, who slipped past security guards at the embassy early in the morning and sought political asylum in Portugal, were evicted from the mission.

Meanwhile, in Canberra yesterday, the Australian senate expressed support for East Timor's independence from Jakarta, contrary to official Australian policy.
