The New York Yankees baseball stadium in The Bronx hosted "A Prayer for America" last night in honour of those missing or dead from the attack on the US two weeks ago.
Thousands wept and cheered at the 26,000-strong multi-faith prayer service as stars including Ms Bette Midler and Mr Placido Domingo sang and politicians such as New York Mayor Mr Rudolph Giuliani led the city in prayer.
Many relatives held photographs of those who are still missing, feared dead.
Actress and television personality Oprah Winfrey last night struck a defiant note as she said: "We Americans refuse to be shattered. We shall not be moved. We are gathered, thousands strong, in the Yankees stadium . . . hope lives, prayer lives, love lives".
The service came on the day that President Bush ended the mourning period in America and ordered the Stars and Stripes to be flown at full mast once again.
