Ian Thorpe smashed Kieren Perkins's world 800-metre freestyle record at the Australian swimming championships with a time of seven minutes 41.59 seconds today.
Thorpe (18) bettered the record of 7:46.00 Perkins set when winning the 1500 metres at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada.
Thorpe's swim gives him the 12th world record of his career - one better than dual Olympic champion Perkins, who retired after the Sydney Olympics.
