HE'S six feet one, with penetrating dark eyes and undeniable charisma. Women throw themselves at him. Who can this be? None other than Gerry Adams according to Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth in her 13 page profile of the Sinn Fein leader.

It's mostly about politics but he does say he has never noticed the women throwing themselves at him. I enjoy the company of women. The sex act, if you're lucky, lasts 15 minutes. Why even jeopardise a relationship which is based on loyalty and love and working through? So it's just not an issue. Colette [McArdle, his wife] is a very strong woman and she has her own identity . . I genuinely couldn't do what I do if my domestic situation crumbled."

Northern radio host Gerry Anderson quipped during the week that now we knew Adams's attitude to semtex and drugs and rock 'n' roll.
