Olympics: Controversial sprinter Katerina Thanou has been named in Greece's provisional squad for the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The 33-year-old, who was banned for two years after a doping scandal that overshadowed the 2004 Olympics in Athens, recorded a time of 11.39 seconds in the 100 metres in the qualifying event on Monday to earn a place in the squad.

"She has made the B time for the team so she is on it," Greece's chef de mission Isidoros Kouvelos said.

As she has only met the B standard, Thanou's place is not yet guaranteed as the time could be beaten by another runner.

Thanou won silver in the 100 metres at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 but in 2004 she, and fellow sprinter Costas Kenteris, missed a drugs test and were accused of staging a motorcycle crash hours before they were due to appear in the opening ceremony.
