THE COUNTRY’S largest retailer, Tesco, has denied putting up prices across the board and described a notice to this effect from one of its managers as a mistake. Instead, the multiple claims to have introduced a further 7,329 price cuts over the past month, on top of the 12,500 cuts announced in May as part of its “change for good” price-reduction strategy.

No more than “a few hundred” of the original 12,500 items had increased again in price, according to Tesco Ireland marketing manager Kenny Jacobs. He was responding to correspondence between Tesco and a customer published on the website cheapeats.ie, which appeared to show Tesco had increased prices after the conclusion of the Change for Good campaign last month.

A customer service manager had replied to a shopper’s query that the “change for good” strategy was over and that “is why you will now be noticing increases in our product prices”.

However, Mr Jacobs said the customer service manager, based in Dundee in Scotland, had made an unfortunate mistake.
