The Kenyan, five-times world cross country champion, won in an unofficial time of two hours four minutes and 55 seconds.

That decimated the previous best of 2:05:38 by American Khalid Khannounchi, set at the Flora London Marathon in April 2002.

Tergat won a race to the line ahead of fellow Kenyan Sammy Korir and blazed through the half-distance in 1:03:01.
