Lexus claims creation of working ‘hoverboard’

Luxury car-maker Lexus has generated a bit of a buzz online after releasing a video showing what it claims is one of the most advanced hoverboards ever developed.

Constructed using bamboo and other materials used in the manufacture of its cars, the Slide hoverboard works using liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets.

While the company says it has created a real “rideable” hoverboard the footage does not show it in operation but instead shows a skateboarder about to step on to the device before displaying the message “It’s just a matter of figuring out how.”

The Slide, which can only operate on a pre-laid track or surface, has attracted quite a bit of attention online with many debating the merits, economic and otherwise, of magnetic levitation.

Testing will take place in Barcelona over the coming weeks but before you get carried away and start saving your pennies for Christmas, this particular device is just a prototype and will not be available for purchase.

The Lexus hoverboard is part of the fourth project in the Lexus ‘Amazing in Motion’ campaign that the company says showcases the brand’s creativity and innovation.
