A Fianna Fail TD has warned schoolchildren that the game is up for the couch potato generation.
Mr Martin Brady said a move by Dublin City Council to upgrade more than 50 playgrounds in Dublin was a first step in making children fitter and healthier.
He said: "We cannot let our children waste away their summer holidays locked inside, glued to television screens.
"I believe that getting children involved in sports and other outdoor activities can ensure they have a healthier future and can also reduce the risk of them becoming involved in anti-social behaviour.
"There is a clear link between obesity and life-threatening diseases in later life.
"We all have a duty to ensure the next generation do not fall victim to such disorders."
He said he would also be encouraging the council to further develop sports facilities across the city.
Mr Brady added: "Children and teenagers must be encouraged to get up from in front of game's consoles and return to the traditional playgrounds in order to prevent us from turning into a nation of couch potatoes."
