Khair Khana Pass, Afghanistan - The heaviest fighting in 10 months broke out north of the Afghan capital Kabul yesterday when the Taliban launched a major attack on opposition forces under the command of Mr Ahmed Shah Masood, travellers said.

They said Taliban aircraft had carried out heavy bombardments on villages as well as military camps in the area on the Shomali plain some 25km from Kabul.

But the fighting subsided after about four hours and they saw Taliban wounded being carried back to Kabul in cars, they said.
