Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher, who broke his leg on Saturday, was the victim of a "cowardly challenge", manager Gerard Houllier said.

Carragher broke his leg when tackled by Blackburn's Australian defender Lucas Neill, who was sent off, during Liverpool's 3-1 win at Ewood Park on Saturday.

Carragher is expected to be out of action for at least six months.

"To me, it was a coward's challenge and the player's reaction was also appalling because he was then complaining about being sent off," Houllier said.

"I didn't like the way in which the game was played and it was a terrible shame. In fact, I would rather have lost the game than have lost two players with serious injuries," the Frenchman added.

Liverpool's Czech international striker Milan Baros suffered a broken ankle earlier in the match and will be out until the end of the year."
