Syria's ambassador to Spain has warned that his country will use military force to defend itself from Israeli attack.

His excellency Mohsen Bilal said that if Israel launches more attacks like the sortie at the weekend then Syria would respond.

"If Israel attacks Syria one, two and three times, of course the people of Syria and the government of Syria and the army will react to defend ourselves."

He said the military response would come "in spite of the fact that we are fighting for peace and wish to reopen the [1991] Madrid [peace] conference".

Israel launched its deepest strike into Syria for 30 years on Sunday, a day after a female suicide bomber from the Islamic Jihad group killed 19 people in a restaurant in the northern Israeli city of Haifa.

Israel said it had hit a training camp for Palestinian militants near Damascus, but Syria said it was a civilian site.

The Ambassador's comments follow US President George W Bush's support for any Israeli action designed to defend itself from state-sponsored terrorism.

Yesterday the Israeli arm,y also released a map it said detailed said political and military offices in Damascus of Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other terror groups.
