Syria is expected to take unspecified steps toward the withdrawal of its forces from neighbouring Lebanon, the head of the Arab League said today.
After a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the League's Secretary-General, Amr Moussa, said Mr Assad also welcomed a UN role in the investigation into the killing last week of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri.
"President Bashar al-Assad stressed more than once in [our] talks his firm intention to press ahead with the implementation of the al-Taif agreement and to plan a Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon in line with this agreement," he said.
