A security cordon is still in place in south Belfast where British army bomb experts carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect device last night.

Police were called to Newforge Lane in the south of the city last night after a telephone call warning of a bomb.

A search of the area was carried out, and the device was located. A controlled explosion was carried out on the device shortly after midnight.

A number of residents who had been evacuated from their homes have now returned.
