THE sunshine which has browned the heads of our by now half baked politicians looks set to continue through the week, but perhaps not all the way to polling day on Friday.

For most of the hopefuls sweating their way from one front garden to the next, there will be little relief for now.

There may be occasional showers today in south Leinster and south Munster, but elsewhere will remain warm and dry.

According to Met Eireann, the sunshine which has brought record high temperatures for this time of the year looks likely to continue until about Friday, by which time a warm front wandering up from the Bay of Biscay should bring broken weather and possibly some serious rain. Met Eireann warns that it cannot predict yet how quickly the front will travel - it could arrive sooner than Friday.

An area of high pressure over Ireland has given us the wonderful weekend with temperatures of up to 27" Celsius in parts of the southwest. Over the next three days, while some cloud may appear with the prospect of showers, easterly winds will ensure the west stays warmest longest. However, even temperatures in the east will have a respectable upper range of between 16" and 21" Celsius.

Meanwhile, it is well that salmon don't yet have the franchise, or they might be finding hard to get home to vote. A drought has left some rivers in the northwest almost waterless. Thousands of salmon remain stranded in estuaries at river mouths and are unable to move upstream.
