Seven people were killed and 47 wounded in Baghdad today when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt as people queued up outside a bank.

Police said Iraqis were queuing up to get compensation for food rations when the explosion went off in the eastern district of the capital.

Sunni Arab insurgents have mounted a campaign of bombings to derail the US-backed political process since shortly after the US invasion toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.
