Businessman Mr J.P. McManus handed over scholarships worth nearly €150,000 to pupils from his former school yesterday. Karl Hanlon reports.
The top eight Leaving Cert students at CBS Sexton Street, Limerick, were each presented with bursaries worth €18,000 to help fund their third-level education.
The J.P. McManus Scholarship Awards are worth €4,500 for each year of the students' third-level studies and were presented by Mr McManus at an awards ceremony last night at the Dunraven Arms Hotel, Adare, Co Limerick.
Mr McManus also presented each of the scholarship winners with a Michel Herbelin watch in gold and silver.
Mr McManus congratulated the students and told them: "Your parents and teachers have played a very important role in guiding and tutoring you during your school life.
"They also deserve recognition and acknowledgment for their support. It must be a very proud day for them to see their efforts being rewarded," he said.
This year's winners were Laurence Browne, Shane Cahill, Alan Daly, Adam Hackett, Stephen Lee, Christopher McNamara, Aidan Mulcahy and Gregory Power.
A total of 64 scholarships have been awarded to students from CBS Sexton Street since 1997 at a cost exceeding €1 million.
