Beijing - Less than two weeks before the 11th anniversary of the crushing of the student pro-democracy movement in Beijing, more than 1,000 angry students this week marched through the campus of Peking University, where it all began, writes Conor O'Clery.

The protest on this occasion was not about politics but at the rape and murder of an undergraduate.

The demonstration took place at midnight on Tuesday, when the students held a march and candle-lit vigil for the murdered woman, Qiu Qingfeng. Yesterday 500 students gathered to seek a meeting with university officials and to mourn Ms Qiu, who was attacked near the university's rural satellite campus of Changping last Friday.

Students complain that inadequate security was provided for new students like Ms Qiu who have to travel to their dormitories along a badly-lit road.
