More than 800 students from Blackrock College in Dublin yesterday attempted to set a world record by forming the world’s largest human shamrock ever on the lawns of the school.

The record attempt was part of celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the annual St Patrick’s Day badges campaign, which was devised at the school and is in aid of charities Goal and Aidlink.

Students donned specially made green T-shirts for the attempt, arranged themselves in the shape of a giant shamrock, and held the position for five minutes to adhere to the guidelines set down by officials from Guinness World Records in London.

Blackrock College principal Alan MacGinty said: “We will be sending evidence of the attempt off to London in the coming days and then we just have to wait and see if we were successful.”

Goal chief executive Barry Andrews said the attempt was “indicative of Blackrock’s imaginative approach to charitable fundraising”.
