Student found dead on golf driving range

A student from Dublin City University (DCU) was found dead on a golf driving range at Citywest, west Dublin, on Thursday morning.

The dead man, Mr Charles Gallagher (21), from Maynooth, Co Kildare, was discovered by a doctor who was practising on the range at around 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Mr Gallagher had attended a black-tie ball in the Citywest Hotel on Wednesday night, which was run by student clubs from DCU.

He was a third-year student of computers at the college.

Gardaí said a post-mortem examination revealed that the dead man died of natural causes and foul play has been ruled out.

It is understood Mr Gallagher left the hotel at around 2 a.m. on Thursday with other revellers, and had intended to catch a specially-chartered bus to take him from the venue.

However, he may have "wandered off", according to a source at the hotel.

It was not clear last night how he ended up on the driving range which is close to the hotel.

A spokeswoman for the college said a "great sadness" had descended on the north Dublin campus as news of Mr Gallagher's death filtered through to students yesterday.

"By all accounts he was a very likeable guy and everyone is devastated by this news," the spokeswoman said.
