One boy was killed and four girls were wounded in New Orleans yesterday when gunmen with an AK-47 assault rifle and a handgun opened fire in a school gymnasium.

Four suspects were arrested within minutes of the shooting at John McDonogh High School, about a mile north of the city's historic French Quarter. Studentssaid the attack was probably gang related.

About 200 students were in the gym when the suspects entered, looking for thevictim, 15-year-old Jonathan Williams, police said.

He was shot repeatedly in the head and body as he sat with his classmates. Other students dived for cover in panic.

Tyrone Crump (17), Herbert Everett (18), and Michelle Fulton (17), were arrested nearby on suspicion of first-degree murder.

A fourth suspect, Larry Moses (19), allegedly hid the trio after the shooting and was arrested as an accessory, police said.

Doctors said a 15-year-old girl had surgery after a bullet went through her legs. Two 16-year-old girls who were grazed by bullets were treated and released.

A fourth student remained in hospital today with stomachinjuries she suffered when she was trampled by fleeing students.
