London - Plans to protect petrol and food supplies and safeguard tanker drivers in the event of another fuel protest were announced yesterday by the British Home Secretary, Mr Jack Straw.

He warned, in a statement to MPs, that the country could not afford a repeat of September's crippling action, which led to dwindling supermarket supplies and put the National Health Service on "red alert". He confirmed army drivers were being trained to operate tankers.
