A 42-year-old-man is being treated in hospital for a fractured skull and gunshot wounds to his ankles after being attacked by masked men in a public house in Strabane, Co Tyrone, on Tuesday night. A police spokeswoman yesterday described the paramilitary-style attack as "vicious".

The incident occurred at 10.45 p.m. when six to eight masked men came into the bar on the main street of the predominantly nationalist town and singled the man out. They beat him with wooden batons before shooting him in the ankles.
