The trial of a university research engineer charged with handling stolen computers has collapsed at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court and the jury has been discharged.

Mr David Murray (31), of Fairways Park, Finglas, Dublin, a computer engineer at the project design and development centre in UCD, had pleaded not guilty to handling stolen computers at his home on September 2nd, 1996. Sgt Declan Smith told the jury that £15,000 worth of computers seized from Mr Murray's home had been stolen from the Patents Office in Merrion Square the previous August bank holiday.

Judge Dominic Lynch discharged the jury following a comment made during the closing stages and listed the case for mention today when a new trial date may be set.
