Tbilisi - About 1,000 people, mostly pensioners, in Joseph Stalin's hometown of Gori turned out yesterday for a ceremony to unveil a statue to the Soviet dictator on the town's main square.

"The 21st century will be the century of Stalin and of socialism," proclaimed the communist party leader, Mr Panteleimon Georgadze, at the ceremony broadcast on Georgian television.
