The Tanaiste, Mr Spring, launched a strong attack on Progressive Democrats last night, claiming that they "heading for irrelevance".
He told the Labour selection convention in that they should not stand the motivation those parties who whined loudest about the influence of Labour in government. Nor should they misunderstand their slogans.
When they said "tax and spend", for example, they should be very clear what the real agenda was.
Referring to the PDs, Spring said that the harsh truth for them was that since Labour entered government, they had created 1 1/2 jobs for every job lost by the PDs.
Labour was determined, at the end of their period in office, to leave behind a new sense in our country - a sense that politics existed to serve all the people and not just small and greedy minorities. "That's another difference - we're growing, and they're heading for irrelevance," he said.
