WHEN the media circus descended in strength on Gorey, Co Wexford, last Wednesday following the revelation that the London bus bomber came from the town, the local hacks pulled a fast one on some foreign visitors. It was Ash Wednesday and many of the townsfolk bore black marks on their foreheads. This, the locals said, showed they were Provo sympathisers and the marks were a sign of respect for the dead man. The visitors believed this. Not until one of their number entered the town's Garda station and saw the gardai with similar markings were they enlightened.
