Johannesburg - The South African government wants to accelerate Africanisation, the Education Minister, Mr Kader Asmal, told a conference on racism yesterday. In agriculture, Mr Asmal (formerly of Trinity College Dublin) said, "we need a far more organised programme that will ensure there is a close working relationship between white and black farmers". The starting point was for white farmers to understand South Africa's land restitution programme, under which the government buys white-owned farms to settle black farmers.
