Security guards are refusing to let anyone into 17th-Century Castle Leslie without prior authorisation.

A stream of vans, trucks and Land Rovers passed through the usually quiet village this morning with reports of marquees being set up inside the castle grounds.

This afternoon the 84-year-old owner, Sir John Leslie, said: "We are told vaguely it is next Tuesday like the papers say, but it is all secret, I have to keep it dead secret.

"They might do something at the last minute or change it, you never know."

Sir John said marquees were being set up in the grounds, lighting effects were being put in the trees and food had been arriving at the castle in the last few days.

The baroque Victorian castle is set in 1,000 acres of parkland and is known for its eccentricity.

The 14 bedrooms have no telephone, television or clock and the bathrooms are described in guides as "wacky" and "outrageous". Waitresses are dressed in Victorian attire.

Rooms range from €195 to €235 per night and previous guests have included members of the Churchill family and the King and Queen of Sweden.

The castle, situated near the village of Glaslough near the Northern Ireland border, around two hours from Dublin, also has a helipad.

Sir Paul has said only that wedding preparations are "going fine" and his official spokesman insisted he did not know where it would be.

Other venues tipped for the wedding are the Hamptons on New York's Long Island, the home of John Eastman the brother of Sir Paul's late wife Linda, Skibo Castle in Scotland, or at a secret location in England.
