The Spanish judge who ordered the arrest of Gen Augusto Pinochet last year will travel to London to attend a hearing of Britain's highest court on the fate of the former Chilean dictator, court sources said yesterday.
They said Judge Baltasar Garzon would be present when seven law lords, sitting as the highest court, re-hear arguments as to whether Gen Pinochet is immune from extradition to Spain.
In an unprecedented move last month, the law lords set aside a historic ruling they made in November that the former Chilean leader had no sovereign immunity. That previous ruling had cleared the way for the start of extradition proceedings.
However, lawyers for Gen Pinochet successfully argued that the case should be heard again because one of the original five law lords had close links with Amnesty International, which has lobbied for Gen Pinochet to stand trial.
